Your opinion on the year 2012 stuff? Bullshit or real?

I'd say I'm in between. Mainly because well... I'm interested in the Galactic Alignment when all the planets in our solar system line up with our sun (which happens once in a very very long time). I'm really curious if anything will happen at that point. At the very least, I don't think something disastrous will happen but let's just say if it does, it will not be at the apocalyptic level. Nostradamus' predictions were also quite terrifying but they really can be interpreted in so many ways, in some points, it's hard to tell if anything will happen.

Have any of your family mates been preparing for 2012? My parents have actually considered some stuff to buy but haven't been all to serious about it. It'd be a pity if the world did end in 2012. Like dang, I wouldn't have even graduated from college by then.

In the year 2012, something of the apocalyptic scale will come to harm us. It's just a theory, similar to Y2K. This time, people are worried because in that year, the Mayan calender ends. The Mayan were some of the greatest civilizations to ever exist and were extremely sophisticated in their knowledge of astronomy. Their lives revolved around the stars. Since their calender ends in the year 2012, perhaps something bad will happen.

There are also some studies done by mathematicians in the Bible where the number, "2012" crosses with the words, "Earth Annihilated" in some mathematical format. But really, you have to question that. I doubt that's the case with every Bible out there. Nostradamus, a prophet that died hundreds of years ago who is revered for his accurate readings in the future has been put onto the spotlight for 2012. It is said he predicted several of our natural disastors (hurricanes, earthquakes, etc.) In his quatrains, one of them talked about a city of glass being submerged underwater. Now if you were a man that lived before our current civilization 500 years ago or so, how would you explain the appearance of a highly urbanized city such as New Orleans? With its sky scraping buildings covered in glass. As you know, New Orleans basically went underwater due to hurricane Katrina.

The Lost Book of Nostradamus was also recently found this year I believe. And in it are horrifying illustrations of his predictions for our future. In one of the pages, a man, possibly Nostradamus himself holds up the Book of Life and it is empty:



In an earlier illustration, there were Three Fates. If you know anything about classical mythology, there are Three Fates, depicted as three women. As you can see at the cut-off image above on the bottom, one of the Fates has disappeared. There was also another image depicting the Wheel of Fortune where the spokes have completely fallen off. It's kind of disturbing when you think about what it means. Was it just a coincidence that his Lost Book was found recently?

People are starting to believe the apocalypse is upon us because of the natural and unnatural disasters that have hit us within the last decade. Hurricane Katrina that devastated New Orleans, the tsunami over in Asia that killed 200,000 people, an increasingly more active super volcano under Yellowstone National Park, Global Warming, failing Economies, etc.

Doesn't really matter. Even if I buy all the stuff I want, when the world comes to an end, they're not going to follow me. The best way to cope with this, whether or not it is true, is just live to the fullest in the moment, like having fun in this forum.

Live life to the fullest? Yeah. It's probably a threat to make us try to get back on our feet no matter how much shit and grit we get from society and nature.

It's certainly interesting. I've done some searching on stuff about the Mayan calendar and I'm also in Archaeology, so we were talking about it some in class. What's going on in 2012 is a coinciding of the two major Mayan calendars, the 260 day ritual calendar, and the 365 day solar calendar. These two calendars also have bigger and bigger cycles based on when they coincide and stuff, and there are ten of these large sets. In December of 2012 is when the tenth set comes to an end. I think. Else it's the 9th set and the 10th set is all this stuff about world upheaval things.

I personally like to think that something will happen, but it's hard to say what it is. I'm not really a Christian, so my first thoughts turn to things like the poles switching and stuff like that. I've heard that we're overdue for the poles to flip by a couple hundred years. It'd be really interesting if it happened in 2012!

Now with that picture... it's hard to tell, but which of the Three Fates do you think is missing?

Oh my. The poles flipping. Is it true our electronics shall fail if that happens? I think I might crie.

I certainly hope not, but... it's possible? I don't know if anyone knows what will happen, since the last time it happened I think there were very few civilizations that could have recorded it - if any!

Also the Mayans actually still exist, which is cool, but they've lost a lot of their old cultures with the introduction of Catholicism into Mesoamerica. Which means that, even if we could figure out stuff about the calendars, we'd still be missing cultural connotations that have been lost to time. Suckage.

I hate it when information gets lost. Like the Great Library of Alexandria. Makes me cry a little inside just to think of all that information gone, with no hope of recovery.

Even if that library survived to this day... Nothing lasts forever. But at least we would've made mass copies I guess.

And I really hope that computers would still run fine after a pole switch. That would be the worst loss of information EVER. (All my music... GONE! T_T)

No, 2012 will be fine. It won't be the end of anything. There is already a movie scheduled to come out then, so it would literally be impossible for the world to end in 2012.

My mom bought into this stuff and now she's decided to buy plane tickets for all our family so that they can be here in case the world ends. The way I see it, Christmas of 2012 is going to be absolutely godawful and it's not going to be because the world ended. My family sux. D;

Most of those theries are bogus to highest degreee. The mayan calender could just as much bee pointing ona date 50 forward in time. And is simply that the mayans though a new "age" would begin. Not the end of the world.

Actually, the Mayan calendar is very accurate, but it's more a matter of if it "coming to an end" is the world coming to an end or just a resetting of the calendar. They have a 365 day calendar much like we do.

It's an interesting system because it uses a dot to equal one day, one bar to equal five days, and once there are five bars, it switches to the next month. This goes on for 360 days, and then they have 5 days at the end of the calendar that are "dangerous days" (according to my North American archaeology professor) that complete the calendar.

I dunno. I think it'll all bullshit. If shit were to go down in 2012, I'd still think it's all coincidence.
If what will end is all this commotion about the world ending.

It's all ludicrous. If the Mayans really thought 2012 was the end of the world, there would be a big Skull hieroglyph with the caption of "Danger: Don't Live Here." I mean, the end of the world is kind of a big event, not something you would want to lose track of. As for the poles switching, people just assume that there will just be a "BANG" and laptops will start exploding. The switching of the poles is already happening, it just takes hundreds of years to finish.

I believe 2012 is just whatever. If we die, we die. Natural form of life. It's just people freaking out about the latest thing to freak out about now. (Y2K... WMDs... Terrorrism... etc.)

Yes, I'm more shocked on this than 2012. Then again, it's reminding us that we humans are mortals.

Maybe it's good to have these superstitions once in awhile. It'll probably make some people tremble in fear and others to appreciate the things in life a little bit more.
